Atlanta Dream Continue to Invest in Player Growth

Dream launch program for retired players, hire first Director of Player Engagement

ATLANTA, Ga. (March 1, 2023) – The WNBA’s Atlanta Dream have hired WNBA veteran player Kia Vaughn as a Basketball Operations Associate and Kiara McClendon as Director of Player Engagement, the organization announced today.

Both hires reflect Dream ownership’s commitment to providing resources and opportunities to both current and former players, giving them a world class experience while in Atlanta and setting them up for both current and long-term success.

“Last year, we focused on adding resources to improve the team’s on-court performance. Going into this season our goal was to provide players with a more holistic experience here in Atlanta by adding more off-court resources and opportunities for players to thrive,” said General Manager Dan Padover. Both of these new positions focus on player growth off the court.”

Kiara McClendon, Director of Player Engagement

In her newly created position, McClendon will serve as the players’ primary off-court liaison, helping them seamlessly transition into life in Atlanta and build a community that bolsters their lives off the court. A major part of her role will also include coordinating player programming and educational enrichment sessions centered around financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and other topics pertaining to their interests and goals. She will work with each athlete individually on their personal and philanthropic interests in order to integrate them organically within the Dream’s community impact efforts, which will in turn help to further the organization’s community, partnership and sales efforts by putting the right players in the right places.

“I am thrilled to have Kiara McClendon onboard with the Dream,” said Head Coach Tanisha Wright. “Our organization understands that the women of the W are so much more than just basketball players, and we are grateful to be able to provide our players with a trusted professional dedicated to helping them continue to grow during their time with our team. Kiara will play a huge part in connecting our players with the opportunities they are seeking and putting them in positions that will help to enrich their lives as professional athletes.”

Retired Player Transition Program

The Dream will also launch a pilot program developed to transition recently retired WNBA players into the next phase of their careers while providing insight and training around the many opportunities in professional basketball, from coaching to working in a front office. The program is designed to develop the WNBA’s own talent with the goal of setting former players up for long-term success.

“Larry Gottesdiener, Suzanne Abair and Renee Montgomery made it clear to me and Tanisha from the beginning that they wanted to help players prepare for life after basketball,” Padover said. “This gives former players a chance to spend a year developing skills that will help them transition into the next phases of their career in an effort to create the new wave of leaders in the WNBA.”

Kia Vaughn, Basketball Operations Associate

Vaughn joins the team in 2023 as the first member of the Dream’s Retired Player Transition Program as a Basketball Operations Associate.

“It’s important that we continue to create opportunities for former players right here within the WNBA,” Wright said. “I am thrilled we are able to provide an opportunity for Kia to begin this next phase of her career with our organization. She has been a consummate professional throughout her career and was a major contributor in our success both on and off the court last year, and I look forward to watching her blossom in her next chapter.”

Vaughn retired from the league after coming to Atlanta for her final season in 2022. In her 13-year career she played with the New York Liberty, Washington Mystics and Phoenix Mercury before joining former teammate Tanisha Wright in Atlanta. She will join former WNBA players Wright, Vickie Johnson and Barbara Turner on the Dream’s staff for the 2023 season.

WNBA’s Atlanta Dream Make Long-Term Commitment to Head Coach and General Manager

Sign AP Coach of the Year Tanisha Wright and
2x Executive of the Year Dan Padover to five-year extensions

ATLANTA, Ga. (December 20, 2022) – Head coach Tanisha Wright, AP Coach of the Year in her first season, and Dan Padover, two-time WNBA Executive of the Year, have each signed five-year contract extensions that will keep them in Atlanta through the 2027 season. Per team policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

“We are essentially building the Atlanta Dream from scratch, and that takes time,” said Larry Gottesdiener, primary owner of the Atlanta Dream. “What Tanisha and Dan accomplished with this team in less than a year is extraordinary, and is something that should put the sports world on notice of exciting things to come from our franchise.”

Wright was named AP Coach of the Year in her first season as a head coach, helped guide Rhyne Howard to a WNBA All-Star appearance and Rookie of the Year award, and is credited throughout the league for establishing a culture of accountability, professionalism and integrity.

“I feel extremely blessed to partner with an organization that has a long term perspective, is willing to invest heavily, and honors the work that Dan and I are doing to build an organization in the right way” said head coach Tanisha Wright. “Our staff and players set a foundation last year and knowing that ownership trusts us to accomplish the goals that we have all set is exciting. This level of commitment and stability will allow us to take the long view as we build our team and our culture, and attract quality professionals and players in pursuit of a championship.”

Padover brought in eight new players to the roster in 2022, including All-Star and WNBA Kia Rookie of the Year Rhyne Howard, after orchestrating a trade for the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA Draft. Padover, a two-time WNBA Executive of the Year, was attracted to the Dream by the blank slate opportunity to build a team from the ground up, in the right way.

“I want to thank Larry Gottesdiener, Suzanne Abair, and Renee Montgomery for reiterating their confidence in Tanisha and me” said Padover.  “When we started on this journey, I had the belief that this ownership group and this leadership team could build something special here in Atlanta. I am even more confident in that belief today. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we are all looking forward to the challenge of making the Dream a perennial championship contender.

“I also want to thank a phenomenal group of players and staff that took a leap of faith with us last season” Padover added. “Every individual took pride in the common goal of resetting the trajectory of the Atlanta Dream and I will forever be grateful for everyone’s buy-in. I believe that when the history is written, Dream ‘22 will be known as the team that turned the franchise around.”

“We targeted two players at 6 and 8 and feel very fortunate to have landed both of them,” said General Manager Dan Padover. “Haley has played at an elite level her entire life and is a versatile guard who will complement our backcourt in a variety of ways. Laeticia is a unique talent with endless potential, and we are looking forward to seeing her growth at the pro level. Leigha is an ultra-competitor who can play multiple positions. We are excited that this year’s draft will bring another influx of youth and excitement to this roster.”

Jones, a four-year starter for Stanford, finished her career in Palo Alto averaging 13.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. She helped lead the Cardinal to an NCAA Championship in her sophomore season and won the Most Outstanding Player nod after defeating current Dream guard Aari McDonald and the Arizona Wildcats with 17 points and 8 rebounds in the championship game.

“We’re excited to have Haley as a part of the Dream,” head coach Tanisha Wright said. “Haley is somebody who we know is a good kid and she is going to be a great culture fit here. She shows extreme versatility in her game, has the ability to play multiple positions and does a lot of different things well while also making others around her better.”

The 6-1 guard averaged career-high numbers across the board in her senior season with 13.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 0.9 steals in 35 games. A first team All-American and Pac-12 Co-Player of the Year in 2022, Jones also helped lead the Cardinal to three-straight regular season Pac-12 titles and two conference tournament championships. Jones also helped lead Team USA to a gold medal at the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup in 2018, where she was named to the All-Star Five along with current Dream forward Iliana Rupert, who was representing France in the tournament.

No. 8 – Laeticia Amihere (luh-TEE-shuh ah-ME-hear)

Amihere comes to Atlanta from Columbia, South Carolina, where she averaged 6.3 points and 4.1 rebounds in four years for Dawn Staley’s Gamecocks. She helped lead the Gamecocks to three NCAA Final Four Showings, including the 2022 National Championship, along with three SEC regular season championships and three SEC Tournament titles.

“Laeticia’s size and athleticism are going to translate very well and will turn her into a long-term player in this league,” Wright said. “Her work ethic and willingness to come in and get better are really going to make her a special player for us. We are excited to have her here in Atlanta and are looking forward to watching her grow.”

With the Canadian National Team, Amihere was a member of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament team that went 3-0 and secured Canada’s third consecutive Olympic appearance – making her the first Gamecock women’s basketball player to compete in an Olympics during her college career. She has competed with Team Canada since 2015, when she was named to the cadet national team that won Canada’s first ever gold at the Under-16 FIBA Americas Championship.

Amihere is now the second Gamecock on the Dream’s preseason roster, joining guard Allisha Gray in Atlanta this summer.

“There’s a toughness and a tenacity about Brown that I really like,” Wright said. “She plays with a chip on her shoulder and isn’t afraid to go to battle – that mindset will give her an advantage as she comes in every day and competes for us.”

Prior to her time with the Wolverines, Brown was named the Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year as a sophomore with Nebraska. She averaged 14.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists in her second collegiate season, producing double figures 23 times, including eight 20-point games.

ATLANTA, Ga. (January 21, 2023) – The Atlanta Dream have acquired Olympic gold medalist Allisha Gray in a trade that sent the team’s 2023 No. 3 pick and 2025 first round pick to the Dallas Wings, the organization announced today.

“Adding Allisha Gray is a huge step for our organization and we are all celebrating a big win today,” said Dream General Manager and Executive Vice President Dan Padover. “She is one of the best two-way guards in the world and is in the prime of her career.
